Itinerary
We begin our journey by driving along the scenic Route 40, skirting the shoreline of Lake Gutiérrez. Enjoy views of Mount Ventana, Mount Catedral, and the continental divide.
As we continue, we reach Lake Mascardi, known for its striking color variations depending on the sunlight. This is where we enter Nahuel Huapi National Park and start ascending the mountain road, surrounded by lush forests of coihues and colihue bamboo.
Our first brief stop along the lake is Playa Negra, a peaceful black-sand beach perfect for taking photos and enjoying the natural surroundings.
Next, we visit Los Rápidos, a narrow area of the lake where the water picks up speed, creating gentle rapids—an ideal spot to admire the power of nature.
We then stop at the Isla Corazón viewpoint, offering a panoramic view of the heart-shaped island in the middle of Mascardi Lake—an iconic photo opportunity.
Continuing our drive, we reach Pampa Linda, a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains, where travelers can stretch their legs, grab a snack, and prepare for the highlight of the day.
Driving onward, we arrive at a glacial plateau, where you’ll catch your first breathtaking view of the Tronador Mountain (3,478 m / 11,411 ft). Its name means "Thunderer", inspired by the rumbling sounds caused by the falling ice from the glaciers.
Our final stop is at the base of Mount Tronador, marking the natural border between Argentina and Chile, and the highest peak in this part of Patagonia. Here you’ll witness:
- The eternal snow on its summit
- The impressive Ventisquero Negro (Black Glacier)
- The lagoon formed by glacial meltwaters
This is a truly unforgettable moment immersed in nature’s grandeur.
