Buying travel insurance is not required but, it is something that should be considered before traveling. While you will be subject to the laws of Peru when traveling abroad, travel insurance can help protect you in emergency situations by giving you the medical care you may need as well as bringing you home for medical treatment, refunding you for delays, and even refunding you for lost luggage or personal items that are stolen. Sometimes, having travel insurance can mean the difference between a good experience and a bad one.

When buying travel insurance consider the following criteria:
- That it covers medical costs such as hospitalization, rehabilitation, life flight, and transportation
to your home country.
- That it covers the loss of luggage.
- That it covers the loss or theft of items.
- That it covers delayed and canceled flights.
Make sure the travel insurance you purchase covers Peru. Certain travel insurances cover only certain areas of the world.
